When I purchased this house more than 10 years ago, it was boarded up, had more plaster on the floor than walls (a slight exaggeration), and was being sold to demolish and redevelop the land. I immediately fell in love and began restoring it while living in it.

I have now lived here longer than I have ever lived anywhere. It is a shockingly peaceful and inspiring home to live in with a large natural yard, which I would love to continue transforming into a permaculture paradise. I refer to this home as the House of the Rising Sun and the Temple of the Firebird, in part because it has a gorgeous daily sunrise view.

Note: My very first home was also an abandoned vintage Victorian which I restored.

I (personally) built and lived in a pyramid in my late 20s until my early 30s.

The pyramid is located at about 7,500’ altitude at the base of the Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado, not too far north of Taos, New Mexico (USA). Local residents included bear, mountain lions, big horn sheep, elk, deer, wild turkeys, rattlesnakes, and more.

Yes, it is still there today! Yes, I still miss it!

More info: In early 1998 I left my home in the city and moved to a remote undeveloped forest property (beyond power, water, and developed roads), attached solar panels onto the roof of my travel trailer with duct tape, and set up a (first gen. one way) internet satellite dish next to a pine tree so that I could continue my computer systems consulting business.

Eventually, I sold the Pyramid and moved to Seattle… and then Portland.

For whatever reason, in my late teens I became fascinated by the love child of the Corvette and the Bel Air that was the Corvair. This unique and small “not quite sports car, not quite family car” even borrowed a tip from the Karman Ghia and put a comparatively impressive (and far superior) engine in the rear, using the front for a hood.

Anyway, I purchased this car from the original owners in 1991? and tore it completely apart; converting the colors from white exterior and red interior to red exterior (Porsche Guard’s Red) to white interior and restoring it with an insane amount of detail. This was a lot work!

Eventually I sold it at a classic car auction (after showing it many car shows) because, frankly, I needed a “daily driver” and this care was too exquisite to subject to that. If I remember correctly, I was 20 or 21 years old at the time and could not afford an extra car or storage for this one.

My dream car for restoration now is either a Volvo P1800 or a Jaguar XJ6 Series I. Know where I can find one?
